Construction estimates, 1836-1849.

Construction cost estimates for various Illinois and Michigan Canal sections and structures calculated by waterway contractors and engineering staff cover all aspects of construction including excavating; mucking; grubbing and cleaning; masonry; and puddling. In addition to labor costs the estimates cover materials (i.e., gravel; slate, quarried and corded rock; timber; planks; concrete) and structures (i.e., waste weirs; waste gates; feeders; aqueducts; locks; dams; protection walls; culverts; bridges; towpaths; ditches). Besides the cost estimates, contractor names and section or structure assignments are noted.
